Our Northern Red Oak tree arrived very healthy. My usual practice is to water a lot the first few weeks after planting. The general care guide included with the shipment (not specific to Northern red oak trees) said to water after planting but then only twice a week after that. Following these instructions our tree was dried out a the leaves were crispy after 6 days.
I should have gone with my gut but it would have been great to have even just a simple print out included specifically for the tree we bought.
I'm really hoping it bounces back.
The tree arrived on a very hot day -- about 92 degrees. I wasn't home on the day it came, but fortunately my wife was there just an hour or two after it was delivered. We brought it inside for a day or so to stabilize it, and has been planted for about 8 days now. It is still looking fine thus far. The tree was described as being 2-3 feet tall, but was close to 4.5 feet tall. It was nice to have a taller start, but at the same time I was worried about it being more risky because it had such a small bare root ball (wrapped in burlap). The tree came with a bamboo support pole to keep it from bending as it grew from a seedling, but you need to have a good broad stake to pound in the ground a foot or two to really do it right. I also happened to have an extra tree sapling guard that I put around it. Fall is coming soon, and I hope it will get some good root development before winter arrives. Will really know the result in May went the oaks in this area leaf out.
Hard to give 5 stars until I know how it survives the winter, but so far, so good.
