Hill's Privet Hedge 1-3'

Product Description

***HILL'S PRIVET IS ONLY AVAILBLE FOR PRE-ORDER  10/13/2022 THROUGH 11/18/22

The Hill's Privet (Ligustrum x hills) is a champion of the Privet family. Locally created and cultivated, the Hill's Privet is a semi-deciduous hedge that will retain most of it's foliage throughout the fall and winter months. An early bloomer, producing delicate white flowers that give way to deep dark green glossy dense foliage. The Hill's Privet dazzles alone or when planted in multiple quantities. When planted in multiple quantities, a dense privacy screen develops, insulating against wildlife, wind and sound. This hedge also helps with erosion control. Grows in a pyramidal shape, however, with yearly shearing the Hill's Privet can take on any literally any shape. These hedges grow at an extremely fast rate, gaining as much as 3 feet per year in many cases. They are also extremely cold hardy, and can weather many brutal winters for years to come. Can tolerate some drought conditions.
Achieve a thicker hedge by planting two rows of shrubs, zig-zag fashion, in a double-wide trench.
Planting: Plant in moderately acid to slightly alkaline soil ranging between 6.0 to 8.0 on the pH scale. Most average garden soils fall between a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0.

Watering: Young privets will require some water to establish roots. Once established, most varieties are exceptionally drought tolerant. Like most ornamental plants, privet will not tolerate wet soil conditions like standing water. Such conditions can lead to root rot and other harmful plant diseases.

Fertilizer: Fertilize in the spring with a slow-release shrub & tree food, preferably one that contains Sulfur and/or Iron.

Pruning: Light pruning can be performed any time of year. Shearing can be performed any time of year, up to two months prior to the average first frost date in your area. Heavy pruning to reduce the size (height/width) or to achieve tree-form should be done while dormant.

Excellent Hedge Saplings with root

We planted our Hedges due to needing privacy in our backyard. The saplings are currently growing new sprouts and that makes me happy. I will do another review as time goes on but very happy with the hedges I received.

Good Quality

Within a day of planting these hedges they put out new leaves. I understand they were busy and under staffed so it took a while to receive my hedges, but it was worth the wait! Highly recommend.

Privet hedge

They came dead looking will see what they will do. Last shipment 3 of the plants died.

2 year growth update

This variety has exceeded my expectations. In exactly 2 years, they have grown from literal twigs wrapped in newspaper, to thick bushes with some approaching almost 6 feet in height to provide extra privacy from the neighbors. I did not expect this here in northern Utah (zone 6). They are indeed semi deciduous and keep many of their leaves on stem throughout winter, so they keep providing cover. I water them 2x weekly in the summer with drip irrigation and fertilize with generic slow release granular fertilizer in early spring. A couple plants did exhibit minor signs of chlorosis last year (i have alkaline clay soil for the most part), and i applied liquid chelated iron a few months ago. They are now all dark green and growing like monsters. I have not seen any flowers or berries on them at all yet, unlike my cheyenne privet. Wondering if they are some kind of fruitless hybrid.
