Yellowwood Tree GT

Product Description

The Yellowwood Tree (Cladrastis kentukea) is a medium-sized, deciduous tree of the legume family with upright low branching and a broad, rounded crown. Panicles of fragrant wisteria like white very fragrant pea shaped spring flowers arrive in late spring, giving way to compound yellow to green foliage that turns bright green in the summer and then yellow in the fall. Autumn seed pods arrive September-October and are yellow, very good fall color. Yellowwood is thought to be our best medium-sized, native flowering tree.

Commonly called American yellowwood, Yellowwood gets its common name from the yellow color of its heartwood when freshly cut. Cladrastis means "brittle branch." The root bark of yellowwood was used as a dye by early settlers in the southern Appalachians. The tree's wood was once used to make gun stocks. Yellowwood's fruit is a typical legume pod and ripens in the fall.

The wood of this tree contains a yellow dye that distinctively colors the heartwood and gives rise to the common name of yellowwood.

Uses: Small tree for residential lawns, may also may be planted near patios and terraces. May be effectively grouped on larger properties. Roots go deep, so other plants may be easily grown underneath.

Plant in full sun to partial shade, in deep, moist, fertile, well-drained loam or moist sandy soil with a medium acid pH.

Height: 30-50'
Width: 40-55'
Spacing: 45-65'

YELLOWWOOD

The tree is potted, 1-1/2 tall. Arrived healthy. It traveled during very hot weather in mid-August but did not seem wilted. I planted it right away using a 6' tall tree shelter. I believe one should use a tree shelter for this tree because it's very young and therefore sensitive to sunburn. I will keep the tree shelter until it grows out of it, which will be in 3-5 years. The shelter protects from deer, too, which I have in my neighborhood. I have excellent experience with tree shelters, especially with shade trees. So far, after 2 weeks, despite very hot weather up to 100 degrees F, it is very fresh inside the tree shelter. I water it copiously twice a week. I put in at least 2" of mulch. This review is not useful much, because it's very soon to tell how it'll do. The company should ask for reviews one year later to see if the tree will survive the winter, etc. Please, feel free to text with any questions: [****].
